Straightening your teeth isn't only about looks — well-aligned teeth are easier to clean and can help your bite work the way it should. Today, most adults and teens choosing orthodontic treatment weigh two main options: clear aligners like Invisalign and traditional braces.
How each one works
Traditional braces use brackets bonded to your teeth and a wire that's adjusted over time to guide teeth into place.
Invisalign uses a series of custom, clear, removable aligners. You switch to a new set on a regular schedule, and each set moves your teeth a little further toward your planned result.
Why many people choose Invisalign
- Nearly invisible — most people won't notice you're wearing them.
- Removable for eating, so there are no food restrictions.
- Easy to brush and floss normally.
- Smooth plastic with no brackets or wires to irritate your cheeks.
- Typically fewer in-office visits.
The trade-off: it's up to you
Aligners only work when you wear them — generally about 20 to 22 hours a day. You'll need to take them out to eat or drink anything other than water, and brush before putting them back in. If you think you might forget or leave them out, braces may be the more reliable option.
When braces may be the better fit
Clear aligners can treat a wide range of crowding, spacing, and bite issues. Some more complex cases, however, may be better suited to traditional braces. The only way to know for certain is an evaluation.
