You've probably heard that you should see the dentist every six months. For many people that's a great schedule — but the right interval actually depends on your individual oral health.
Why regular checkups matter
Many dental problems, like cavities and early gum disease, don't cause pain until they've progressed. Regular exams let us catch issues while they're small, simpler, and less expensive to treat. Professional cleanings also remove hardened tartar that brushing and flossing at home can't.
When you might need more frequent visits
Your dentist may recommend coming in more often if you:
- Have a history of gum disease
- Get cavities frequently
- Smoke or use tobacco
- Are pregnant
- Have diabetes or another condition that affects your oral health
- Wear braces or have dental implants
Your daily routine matters too
Checkups work best alongside good habits at home:
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or another interdental cleaner.
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks.
- Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
Let's find the right schedule for you
At your next visit, we'll recommend a checkup interval based on your health, history, and risk factors — so you're never coming in more or less often than you need to.
